Becoming enlightened and engaging in work… such a concept did not exist in spiritual world. Stage of enlightenment can only be reached by a human being who successfully engaged in service of mankind all the time like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed.
Enlightenment is reached negating karma to zero forever. In absence of karma how could a human being work! An enlightened soul after reaching stage of enlightenment always indulgence in discourses, to give back to community what one realized during journey of enlightenment.
Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism) gained enlightenment at 42 years of age. For full 30 years he gave deshna (discourses) and left his mortal frame 72 years of age. For an enlightened one the whole world becomes one large family.
