To an awakened person, an enlightened one what mattered most was service of mankind at large all the time. Very few enlightened souls after reaching stage of enlightenment left their mortal frame. Most engaged in the service of mankind after reaching stage of enlightenment.
Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism) gained enlightenment at 42 years of age. For full 30 years he indulged in deshna (discourses) to give back to the community what he gained on path of spirituality. Gautama Buddha all his life engaged in discourses, preaching along whatever he learnt on path of spirituality. Gautama Buddha gained enlightenment around 80 years of age. By that time his body was so frail, he left his mortal frame 81 years of age.
The prime reason why Siddhartha Gautama became Gautama Buddha 80 years of age was his leaving confines of family without burning his karma in totality. Just by touching feet of wife and child we do not absolve self of karma in totality. Siddhartha wandered in search of cosmic truths in deep dense forests but could not find them successfully. He returned to the community (not his home). He continued his indulgence but still did not succeed. Finally sitting under a bodhi tree for 12 years in continuation he gained enlightenment. For this very reason Gautama Buddha preached doctrine of middle path… neither by going to deep dense forests, one reached enlightenment or living in confines of community alone. He advised to take middle path, the best of both.
The physical form of an enlightened one is so energetic, beaming with energy that without speaking a word one could telepathically say it all within a sphere of at least a few hundred feet. The aura of an enlightened one spread for miles.
