Maryada Purushottam Rama existed about 800 years before coming of Lord Krishna.
King Janaka (father of Sita in Ramayana) was an enlightened one who gained his wisdom under able preceptorship of sage Yajnavalkya (composer and compiler of most voluminous Brihadaranyaka Upanishad). All Upanishads (record of above 200 Upanishads exists in India today) came into being after coming of four Vedas… Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. This amply clarifies that sage Yajnavalkya came after existence of Vedas in erstwhile Bharatvarsha (now India).
During times of Rama travelers of spiritual path reached stage of enlightenment indulging in Vedas and Upanishads. As Vedas were voluminous documents it was not possible for masses to indulge in them and also Upanishads (independent treatises). The wisdom of Vedas and Upanishads was limited to scholars, sages and Rishis. All the Upanishads were independent treatises composed and compiled by individual sages, Rishis who expounded on the theory that particular Upanishad dealt with.
Until time of Maryada Purushottam Rama, Ramayana jnana wisdom contained in scriptures did not percolate to the masses. And came, Lord Krishna an avatar in the battle of Mahabharata! With coming of Lord Krishna the jnana wisdom contained in Vedas and Upanishads spread to masses in the form of sermon of Bhagavad Gita. It is only after advent of Lord Krishna… entire mankind became aware of jnana wisdom contained in Vedas and Upanishads.
Ramayana happened first and then Mahabharata.
