Behind Sage Yajnavalkyas interest in Money lay Benefit of Mankind in form of Gurukul and his Shisyas

Sage Yajnavalkya (composer and compiler of most voluminous Brihadaranyaka Upanishad), the spiritual guru of King Janaka (father of Sita in Ramayana) was an enlightened soul. He ran a pretty large gurukul containing above 5000 students. He indulged in money for the sake of his gurukul and students.

When he asked King Janaka for funds, King Janaka thought over it and finally decided to keep a competition to decide, who the most intelligent spiritual master of that era was. If King Janaka parted with sufficient amount of money for gurukul of Sage Yajnavalkya, then other religious pundits may have revolted. To pacify all, a discourse of all discourses was organized.

When arrived the time for starting the session of discourses, Sage Yajnavalkya entered with his attendants and ordered that all 100,000 cows with five gold coins attached to each horn be taken to the gurukul. The whole congregation was aghast. The competition had not yet begun and Sage Yajnavalkya wanted to take away the prize in advance.

The confidence of Sage Yajnavalkya explains it all. He was the most intelligent spiritual master of his times. Behind his interest in money lay the benefit of mankind in form of gurukul and his shisyas.
