Spiritually Lord Krishna was the first and only avatar who manifest on mother earth. Lord Brahma during 14 years of exile succeeded in full awakening of kundalini shakti by practicing 12 years of absolute celibacy… prime reason for his banishment that was orchestrated by King Dasharatha.
Not only Lord Rama was an enlightened soul but his father-in-law (father of Sita in Ramayana) King Janaka also gained enlightenment under able preceptorship of Sage Jnanavalakya (composer and compiler of most voluminous brihadaranyaka Upanishad).
An avatar is one who in times of extreme strife tribulation manifests on mother earth to re-establish Dharma (righteousness) against evil forces of adharma (lawlessness). Such a situation did not exist in times of Lord Rama, prime reason why he could not be equated to an avatar but only an enlightened one. Maryada Purushottam Rama is purified for exemplary human values exhibited by him.
Lord Krishna came in Dwapar Yuga to re-establish Dharma (righteousness). His sermon of Bhagavad Gita was to activate Arjuna from slumber of cowardice. After the sermon, Arjuna reached enlightenment and finally prepared self to fight battle of Mahabharata head-on. An avatar never indulges in the battle of karma directly but only indirectly as did Lord Krishna by becoming a sarthi (charioteer) of the chariot belonged to Arjuna.
An avatar was almost an embodiment of God Almighty on mother earth (God manifest in human form). An avatar is a ruthless combination of an enlightened one coupled with power of Chanakya, the most able administrator in the entire history of mankind. To save lives of millions of soldiers and countrymen, Chanakya got eliminated 100 kings in one night.
An avatar manifest on mother earth every 3500 to 5000 years! About 3650 years before now advent Lord Krishna and in present about a decade from now mankind would witness advent of Kalki avatar, an avatar of present era that finally succeeds in re-establishing Dharma (righteousness) in present times. A one-man army, equivalent of Lord Krishna… Kalki avatar would be a phenomenon to watch!
All the avatars before Lord Rama relate to Hindu mythology! It was for travelers of spiritual path to distinguish spirituality from mythology.
