Meditation Techniques for Beginners

Quick is a word that does not exist in the dictionary of spirituality. All types of yoga meditation had only one purpose… reaching God in present life. If someone indulges in yoga meditation for some other purpose or belief, one is utterly mistaken. Spirituality is the path that directly leads to God Almighty. Yoga is derived from the root word “yog” which in Hindi stood for synthesis, yoking. The effort of a soul atman to merge (yoke) with Parmatman (God Almighty) is termed yog, and the path yoga meditation. In Hindi two yog two equals four. None world over could change this definition of yoga meditation. All scriptures of Hinduism clearly defined purpose of yoga meditation. We must not confuse yoga meditation with yogic exercises.

The foremost of all yoga meditation techniques, the process of breathing is the first step on path of pure spirituality. We need to understand who needs breathing. Is it the manifest human form or our soul atman, the spirit within! Thinking logically we would realize that our heart is the seat of our soul atman. It is our heart that needs breathing in absence of which it will die. If we desire reaching God in present life, it amounts to reaching our true inner self… our soul atman, the spirit within. Through breathing process we must try to concentrate on inhaling and exhaling. While doing so our concentration must be on our soul atman, the spirit within. We must indulge in self enquiry while breathing.

Maharishi Ramana, an advocate of path of self enquiry (path of Neti… not this, not this) all the time indulged in path of contemplation lying in shavasna pose of yoga to reach God. In practice this path was not difficult. While going to bed in the night, lying in shavasna pose of yoga we could every single day indulge in self enquiry, path of contemplation, path of logical reasoning. Our effort should be to decrease queries within. One by one all queries within us must dissolve forever. The ultimate purpose of path of self enquiry was reaching the hidden underlying truths contained in various sacred scriptures of Hinduism. As dross impurities within our soul atman removed we scaled new barriers of spiritual pursuit.

On path of yoga meditation one needs help of teachings contained in sacred texts of Hinduism. This can only be done by travelling path of jnana yoga (path of absolute wisdom)… path of self enquiry as followed by Maharishi Ramana. To establish absolute control over five senses and mind, our indulgence in path of nishkama karma yoga was mandated by God. As everything belonged to God Almighty, we were only an instrument, a custodian, caretaker in the game of earthly life. It was not we but our soul atman within that needs gaining absolute purity forever. By indulgence in path of nishkama karma yoga, offering fruits of karma performed to God Almighty all the time we slowly succeeded in removing attachments of physical manifest life. We almost become a recluse on earthly plane.

Indulging in sacred text, teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita one finally realizes God one day. Path of spirituality was not difficult to travel but one requires highest level of patience, persistence and perseverance that could ever be practiced by human beings. One practically needs becoming a Swami Vivekananda, to sincerely and diligently travel path of meditation yoga.
