Metaphorically Lord Shiva stands for an Enlightened Being One who Succeeded in Reaching Atage of Enlightenment

Epics Ramayana and Mahabharata are based on real life stories of both Maryada Purushottam Rama and Lord Krishna! They had nothing to do with mythology. Lord Shiva, an attribute of God Almighty had nothing to do with absolute reality. None by the name of Lord Shiva ever manifest on mother earth.

Metaphorically, Lord Shiva stands for an enlightened being… one who has succeeded reaching stage of enlightenment! The coiled serpent in the neck of Lord Shiva says it all. The coiled serpent represents full awakening of kundalini shakti, the coiled Serpentine energy lying dormant in base of spine. Even the dark blue body of Lord Shiva depicted in Hinduism reflects the poison retained by Lord Shiva in the neck and some seeping into the body.

On path of pure spirituality when seekers indulged in Samudra Manthan (churning of their both positive and negative thoughts)… both Amrita (elixir of life, nectar) and Vish (poison) were generated. The Amrita helped one in full awakening of kundalini shakti and the Vish had to be retained in the neck (some of it flowing to the body automatically).

Lord Shiva though intrinsic part of spirituality was recognized more in religious practices (rituals).
