Any scripture following which human beings reached stage of enlightenment was sacred. This statement however was spiritual in nature. Any scripture that deals with religious practices, contained stories about ethics and morality also formed sacred literature in Hinduism.
To travel path of spirituality… jnana wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads was necessitated. To indulge in religious practices (rituals) knowledge of Vedas was an absolute must. Literary works relating to mythology also formed part of sacred texts like Itihasas, Puranas etc.
