Allegorically Lord Shiva represents an Enlightened Soul One whose Kundalini had Awakened fully

The most powerful attribute of God Almighty (Brahman in Hinduism) reflects only one thing. Lord Shiva always has a serpent in his neck. His body is also depicted blue.

Allegorically Lord Shiva represents an enlightened soul, one whose kundalini had awakened fully. The serpent in the neck of Lord Shiva was reminiscent of this fact. Unless human beings practiced absolute celibacy for a minimum period of 12 years in continuation, full awakening of kundalini shakti was not possible, the coiled Serpentine energy lying dormant in base of spine.

Thousands of thoughts both positive and negative flowed through our brain every second of life. Governed by these human beings indulged in day-to-day affairs of life! Wise men indulged in Samudra manthan all the time. Churning the ocean of these thoughts through help of kundalini human beings produced Vish (poison) and also Soma, Amrita (elixir of life). The Vish (poison) could be retained in neck or let it spread all over resulting in dark blue body.

Amrita, Soma could be used for activating chakras resulting in full awakening of kundalini. For spiritual travelers the character of Lord Shiva, even Lord Krishna expressed the ultimate stage in human life, stage of enlightenment and finally moksha salvation.
