Idol worshipping in Hinduism primarily was symbolic. It never mattered what the idol was made of. In places where people could not afford even a temple … people prayed to a banyan free, at times even a rock. Worshipping mountains and rivers was common in Hinduism. As everything was symbolic, all prayers were offered to God Almighty, the creator of cosmos.
Religious people who could not conceptualize Nirakaar form of God (having no form) worshipped Sakaar form of God (having a form). There was nothing wrong about it. Only travelers of spiritual path believed in Nirakaar form of God (having no form).
