The consciousness never enters the body. Rather it is vice versa. A soul atman, the consciousness manifests a body to work out its karma, remove dross impurities within.
After death of present body, the released soul atman again manifests a new body based on residual balance of karma at the time of death. This circle of life continues until human beings gained enlightenment in their lifetime.
Reaching stage of enlightenment announces cycle of birth and death for a soul atman coming to an end forever. A pure soul atman need not manifest a body again. In absence of karma (dross impurities within), the need for soul atman to manifest a new body ceases to exist.
