Lord Rama and Ramayana

Born an ordinary mortal, Rama knew from the beginning that he would become a man god, one who gained enlightenment in his lifetime. The 12 years of Vanvas (forests exile) Rama was forced to undergo is only symbolic, for 12 years practice of absolute celibacy was necessitated for full awakening of kundalini shakti, the coiled Serpentine energy lying dormant in base of spine.

Even though married, Rama spent life in exile as a celibate. He finally became a man god at the end of journey. Rama is termed an avatar in scriptures of Hinduism for he was successful in eliminating Rakshasas (demons) who disturbed sages and saints indulging in yajña (sacrificial Agni). Rama was married to Sita, daughter of King Janaka, a karma Yogi par excellence.

The spiritual preceptor of King Janaka was Yajnavalkya, an enlightened saint. The second dutiful wife of sage Yajnavalkya Maitreyi also gained enlightenment in her lifetime. Maitreyi is one of the two ladies who finally reached stage of enlightenment in their lifetime in the entire history of mankind. The other was philosopher saint Gargi.
