Shiva lingam was symbolic of phallus and yoni. The creative power as manifest in human beings was sexuality. Sexual power was the most potent of all powers made available to mankind by grace of God Almighty. It is transcending sexuality human beings finally reached stage of enlightenment… successfully awakening kundalini shakti, the coiled Serpentine energy lying dormant in base of spine.
Shiva lingam represents the creative power of cosmos transcending which one reaches end of cosmic life… becomes a pure soul atman forever. One has to rise above sexual inhibitions for full awakening of kundalini shakti. Unless one practiced absolute celibacy for a minimum period of 12 years in continuation… full awakening of kundalini shakti was not possible.
Everything detailed in scriptures must not be interpreted literally. Through path of contemplation we have to reach the hidden underlying meaning. Even though life could not exist in cosmos in absence of sexuality… any discussion about male and female sexual organs was still a taboo in our society. Seekers who understand… assimilate this cosmic truth finally succeed in reaching cosmic end of their life.
