Lord Krishna did not indulge directly in the battle of Mahabharata. Lord Krishna was only a sarthi (charioteer) of the chariot belonging to Arjuna.
Allegorically Lord Krishna represents consciousness, spirit… soul atman existing in human body! Of its own no soul atman could purify self, emancipate forever from cycle of birth and death. It needs a medium, a body to work out its karma… remove dross impurities within!
In the battle of dharma (Mahabharata) Arjuna, the owner of chariot (human body) listens to inner voice of Lord Krishna existing in his heart. Eventually Arjuna succeeds in battle of dharma defeating forces of adharma (lawlessness) existing within. For a soul atman to gain absolute purity, gain liberation from cycle of birth and death forever… our overpowering evil tendencies existing within us was necessitated.
These evil tendencies within human beings were five senses and mind. To reach stage of enlightenment, empowering five senses and mind in totality was necessitated. Due to presence of ego (Aham in Hinduism) we failed to realize presence of Lord Krishna within. The moment we subdued our ego within, the voice of Lord Krishna within becomes totally distinct.
When human beings traveling path of spirituality succeed in gaining enlightenment, the Lord Krishna within finally wins, reaching stage of absolute purity! At all stages of life this Lord Krishna always acts as Dhrishta (onlooker) never directly interfering with life of human beings. Traveling path of truthfulness when human beings wanted advice of Lord Krishna within, it was freely available all the time!
