Find a Guru Spiritual Mentor Necessity of Spiritual Path

In my search for God Almighty I searched for a guru, spiritual mentor to guide me in the journey of life. No matter how best I searched I did not find a guru in my life. From the beginning of life almost 10 years of age I developed a passion for reading books galore. As my goal of life was reaching God in present life I read life history of many spiritual masters including Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana.

Slowly I realized that on path of absolute truthfulness, both Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana had finally succeeded in reaching God. From then onwards they became my guide in the spiritual journey of life. Whatever literature, writings I could get hold on relating to Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa on Maharishi Ramana, I devoured it again and again. I wanted to get to the hidden underlying truth.

Slowly I started gaining pearls of wisdom from teachings of both Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana. In his lifetime Maharishi Ramana followed path of self enquiry, path of Neti (not this, not this) to reach God. I almost duplicated this path. Lying in shavasna pose of yoga I indulged in path of self enquiry, Neti (not this, not this) to eliminate everything that was not God.

We need exercising power of discrimination to distinguish right from wrong. It is this power of discrimination that leads us to a spiritual master, if we find any. True spiritual preceptors are difficult to come by. You would be lucky if you find one. Sufficient literature, sacred texts are available in Hinduism fathoming which any human being world over could easily reach God.

It does not matter whether we find a guru or not, scriptures of Hinduism advise otherwise. If we had a guru in spiritual life, there was always a possibility of developing affinity towards the revered one. This would cause further bondage, resulting in adverse effects on spiritual journey. In the present world hordes of so-called religious teachers, preachers preached half baked theories to gullible mankind.

What use following such gurus to accomplish our goal of life?
