Commentaries on Bhagavad Gita were very limited but translations, narratives existed in many hundreds. The original gist of Bhagavad Gita, the original teachings of Lord Krishna, the composition of 700 shlokas verses in Sanskrit with English or Hindi transliteration were available for mere Rs. 40/= ($.60) from Gita press, Gorakhpur, India. This is a highly subsidized publication and almost all publications of Gita press were within reach of commoners, masses, courtesy late founder Jayadayal Goyandka of Gita press.
Gita press also has commentaries on Bhagavad Gita by Adi Shankaracharya, Jayadayal Goyandka and Swami Ramsukhdas. These are very authentic commentaries and for a beginner a true asset. Commentary by Adi Shankaracharya believes in Nirakaar form of God (having no form). Regarding commentaries by Jayadayal Goyandka and Swami Ramsukhdas you would have to personally look into. I would advise personally going to Gita press and selecting what suits best.
Gita press, Gorakhpur has branches in all main cities of India.
