Everything relating to rituals, the exact procedure was contained in Vedas but not Upanishads. All Upanishads dealt with spiritual aspects of life having nothing to do with rituals (religious practices). To reach God, to realize God… jnana wisdom contained in Upanishads was necessitated, never the ritualistic procedures contained in Vedas. In present times none could reach God following path of religion (rituals). Total submission demanded by bhakti yoga was not possible in present times.
Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana initially started in pursuit of God via path of bhakti yoga. Finding God could not be reached via path of bhakti yoga alone both finally switched to path of jnana yoga and karma yoga. Everything worth knowing on path of spirituality and contained in Vedas also existed in Bhagavad Gita. In present times people followed wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita than Vedas. Everything contained in Bhagavad Gita also relates to path of spirituality not rituals.
