When death occurs on mother earth, the released soul atman immediately manifests a new body to start new journey of life. Only if matching parents were not available on mother earth, the soul atman hibernated in heaven or hell.
If the soul atman of your departed friend has already manifested a new body, we would never be able to recognize the new form. The most we could do for a departed one was fulfil the unfulfilled desires. Once a soul atman leaves the body, all earthly relationships come to naught forever.
As per doctrine of karma, based on karmic balance chances of meeting this friend again in present life were great but we would never be able to recognize one in new manifestation.
