Battle of Mahabharata was no ordinary war… it was a battle fought to re-establish dharma (righteousness) against evil forces of adharma (lawlessness). When society reached a point of no return… advent a messiah, savior… an avatar to save mankind from ills of those times!
When Kauravas (siding evil) did not budge despite Lord Krishna telling them to follow path of Dharma, the only solution left was fighting it out in the battle of Dharma. As detailed in scriptures of Hinduism, when Dharma was involved… even earthly relationships did not matter. In the battlefield one could not indulge in practice of ahimsa (so-called nonviolence)… the cause for death of Lala Lajpat Rai at the hands of British lathies rained on him mercilessly.
Mahatma Gandhi was squarely responsible for death of Lala Lajpat Rai.
It was not a matter of patience or cowardice shown by Arjuna… it was purely a matter of re-establishing Dharma that battle of Mahabharata was fought. When facing an enemy loaded with AK-47 we could not fight the war with bows and arrows. Kauravas had to be taught a lesson. Practicing forgiveness, patience did not work with Kauravas. They were hell-bent on decimating the rightful Pandavas.
Through sermon of Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna emphasized on Arjuna that he was not an individual but one representing his country… both civilians and soldiers! In the face of enemy he could not practice cowardice under any circumstances. When Arjuna realizes shallowness of his thinking that he was primarily a soul atman, not a manifest physical form… he prepared to fight Kauravas head-on.
