Meaning of Lakshman Rekha Ramayana

The precept of Lakshman Rekha in Ramayana was more of metaphorical than a historical fact. To keep people bonded within moral and ethical fold, the concept of Lakshman Rekha evolved in Hinduism. It took me many years to realize what Lakshman Rekha truly meant for a traveler of spiritual path. The moment I realized the hidden inner meaning, I practiced concept of Lakshman Rekha every time wherever mandated by God or realized otherwise.

To establish control over five senses and mind, the concept of Lakshman Rekha is really a beautiful concept. We set our boundaries while travelling spiritual path to avoid falling in the rut of life. Suppose I wanted to practice celibacy (Brahmacharya Vrata) then it was just not possible to immediately stop sexual indulgence without giving a suitable warning to spouse in advance. It was then I formed a Lakshman Rekha. No more than four indulgences in a month was my Lakshman Rekha.

This was subsequently changed to three… then two and finally one. Came a time when I acted like a brother to my spouse, meaning no further sexual interaction. I practiced absolute celibacy for a period of 14 years in continuation without faltering even once. I started in search of God 13 years of age, 25 years of yoga meditation I finally reached God in the wee hours of third of August 1993 at 37 years of age.

In my lifetime I may have formed thousands of Lakshman Rekhas to establish absolute control over five senses and mind. The concept of Lakshman Rekha is noble in the sense that it needs to be exercised through our willpower. Only by practicing patience, persistence and perseverance of the highest order we could practice concept of Lakshman Rekha. It is truly an absolute fact of life that ethical and moral standards could never be forced on one. They are always practiced internally by forming Lakshman Rekhas from time to time.

In case of Sita in Ramayana, Laxman indicated to Sita how she had to behave when facing an intruder. As both Rama and Lakshman were out chasing Rakshasas (bad people) to protect sages of those times, Laxman bound Sita by Lakshman Rekha to protect her from impending perils and evils. It was failure on part of Sita that she got abducted by Ravana despite her being protected by a Lakshman Rekha.
