Terms like escapism do not exist in dictionary of Hinduism. There was much more to life than the visible manifest physical human form. Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita says we were primarily a spirit manifesting human form. This consciousness, soul atman within manifested human form to work out its karma… remove dross impurities within. In human form we had a maximum of 1.1 million manifestations before reaching stage of enlightenment and finally moksha salvation.
Most in India were tuned from the beginning of life to think of life in terms of moksha salvation. We are taught when very young that traveling path of spirituality, indulging in Bhagavad Gita one could emancipate forever from cycle of birth and death. This was an absolute possibility for not in hundreds but thousands from erstwhile Bharatvarsha (now India) gained enlightenment in their lifetime. On the contrary outside of India only Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed succeeded in gaining enlightenment.
Though Bhagavad Gita was a proprietary of Hinduism yet, its teachings were universal in nature. Any human being world over belonging to any religion, faith or belief can indulge in teachings of Bhagavad Gita to reach stage of enlightenment in present life time. One need not convert to Hinduism for assimilating pearls of jnana wisdom contained in Bhagavad Gita. Even while living family life (Grihastha ashram) one could undertake spiritual journey to reach end of cosmic life, 8.4 millionth manifestation.
Mahavira and Gautama Buddha were not escapists nor were Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed. In the last about 150 years amongst 7 billion people existing world over Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana finally succeeded in gaining enlightenment in their lifetime. Both Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana were not escapists.
Path of spirituality is not that easily covered. Spiritual journey demands highest level of patience, persistence and perseverance that could ever be practiced by human beings. In practical life we have to become a Swami Vivekananda to gain enlightenment in present life.
