The scriptures of Hinduism religion differed from Christianity or Islamic Dharma. In Christianity till date only Jesus Christ reached stage of enlightenment. In Islamic Dharma also only Prophet Mohammed reached stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana). Same was the case with Buddhism where only Gautama Buddha gained enlightenment.
Hinduism and also Jainism were distinct from above practices, religions. Hinduism religion (called a way of life) should aptly be called Sanatana Dharma, a dharma existing from times immemorial. Hinduism is the oldest religion of world. In Hinduism not in hundreds but thousands gained enlightenment in the entire history of mankind. India was the spiritual citadel of world, is and would always be.
In yesteryears, in erstwhile Bharatvarsha (now India) different sages and saints (popularly called Rishis) evoked messages from God from time to time. The initial words of God invoked by sages were termed Vedas (Hinduism revelations) primary of which are Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Many sages (Rishis) wrote independent treatises which were termed Upanishads. About 214 Upanishads (independent treatises) have been recorded till date.
And finally arrived Lord Krishna who delivered sermon of Bhagavad Gita in the battle of Mahabharata! The teachings of Bhagavad Gita had no parallel in mankind. All the 700 shlokas verses contained in Bhagavad Gita were pure jnana wisdom. Following precepts of spirituality contained in Bhagavad Gita any human being world over belonging to any religion faith or belief can reach stage of enlightenment… become a Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or prophet Mohammed in present life.
The other sacred texts of Hinduism consist of Puranas, Itihasas, Agamas and Darshanas! Some holy books dealt with rituals (indulgence in yagnas), others in pure jnana wisdom. Amongst all scriptural texts of Hinduism, Bhagavad Gita is the foremost of all.
