By realizing some cosmic truths of life, we could do away with ego forever termed Aham in Hinduism.
In the first place, ego was created by God to facilitate human form to live life in a meaningful manner. In absence of ego, life would lose its meaning. Human beings would be no better than animals. Absence of desire would result in total chaos in life of human beings.
Reducing ego to zero is the requirement of spiritual life. Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism), Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed did it to reach cosmic end of life… stage of enlightenment in their lifetime. In absence of ego, these man gods became pure souls’ atmans.
As detailed in scriptures of Hinduism… ego (Aham) can only be reduced by indulging in karma, nishkama karma way of life. Nishkama karma way of life means indulging in karma as a trustee for whom… the fruits of karma always belonged to God Almighty! No matter how we indulged in karma… fruits of karma performed always lay in domain of souls atmans, never the manifest physical human form.
When we realized we were primarily a soul atman on its cosmic journey of life… we succeeded in reducing our ego step-by-step. Rather it was vice versa. By reducing our ego in stages… we realized we were primarily a spiritual being manifesting human form.
For a true karma Yogi… nothing belonged to one! For a true trustee… everything belonged to God Almighty all the time. We were only an instrument in hands of God Almighty doing his bidding all the time. The moment we shed all attachments of earthly life (termed Moha in Hinduism), we were free from bondage of ego forever.
I practically started in search of God six years of age. By nine my desire to search God reached its zenith. Something within told me that I must remain truthful all along if I were to search God in this life. I slowly started practicing nishkama karma yoga in every stage of life. Came a time when I negated my karma to zero. My ego melted forever. I finally became ego less forever. Getting rid of Moha (extremely emotional attachments) was the biggest hurdle in my spiritual pursuit. The moment I overcame Moha, I also got rid of ego forever. At that stage of life, the whole world became a large family for me.
There was nothing I could call my own. I had finally become one with infinite consciousness.
