Literally human beings were totally incapable of understanding consciousness. But indulging in contemplation one not only understands what cosmic consciousness was all about but also realizes self as cosmic consciousness, a soul atman on its cosmic life cycle… that manifest human form to work out its karma, remove dross impurities within.
As detailed in Bhagavad Gita we were primarily a spirit, consciousness manifesting a physical body. Due to presence of ego (Aham in Hinduism) we failed to realize our true inner self. The moment our ego negates to zero, we as a soul atman reached stage of absolute purity gaining emancipation from cycle of birth and death forever.
