For most Hindus in India, money has become an end in itself! Hoarding wealth for many lifetimes was common. People in West were materialistic yet open from within. They were materialistic yet not deeply attached to materialistic pursuits alone. They lived in the moment and enjoyed life the most.
Materialism in India was at its peak. From beginning to end the life of a Hindu is spent in hoarding wealth. A Hindu never truly enjoys life, lives in the moment! Even billionaires in India did not truly enjoy material pursuits in life. None was happy from within.
A materialistic society in absence of basic law and order, infrastructure was meaningless! For the welfare of individuals self, an Indian could kill interests of others. It was not so in the western society where community standards exhibit high level of decency, reciprocity.
The teachings of Bhagavad Gita in India were limited to rituals. In the western world most practiced fundamentals of Bhagavad Gita even though knowing nothing about Bhagavad Gita! Communal harmony in West was at its best. It is only in recent times it has started deteriorating.
What use of renunciation if we could not become a perfect gentleman, a true human being from within! People in West preached what they themselves followed. In India we preached what we ourselves did not follow. We set examples for others, not for individual self! Pretension was writ large in every phase of life. If we were not true from within, we were no better than animals!
