Initially came Vedas, words of God (Hinduism revelations)… the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Vedas were followed by Upanishads (independent treatises). Individual sages and Rishis contemplated and compiled independent treatises on various issues of spiritual life. All primary 11 Upanishads contained truth and only truth. Upanishads numbered over 200. And finally followed sermon of Bhagavad Gita by Lord Krishna in the battle of Mahabharata!
As Vedas were voluminous documents incomprehensible to masses, coming of Lord Krishna, an avatar of his era was a boon for mankind. The essence of spirituality contained in Vedas and Upanishads also existed in Bhagavad Gita. Follower of Bhagavad Gita finally becomes knower of all.
Hinduism scriptures primarily relate to 2 categories… religious and spiritual. Both Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads relate to spirituality and Vedas both to religious and spiritual. For knowing Hinduism in depth, anything other than these three categories of scriptures was not necessitated.
