Working with an unattached attitude Moha extreme emotional attachment

Working with an unattached attitude was totally different from detachment. This inherent aspect of life has been explicitly detailed in Bhagavad Gita, the sermon given to mankind by Lord Krishna.

Working with an unattached attitude means not attaching self to fruits of karma performed. We just could not leave family life midway as did Siddhartha Gautama. Just by touching feet of wife and child one could never absolve self of karma in totality. We have to undo karma, negate karma to zero forever.

Working with an unattached attitude translates to working like a trustee. In the trusteeship concept we were only the doer, a custodian… caretaker taking care of things that already belonged to God. A trustee never believes that one owned anything in life. For a trustee, one was only an instrument in hands of God Almighty doing his bidding all the time, a true soldier of God.

King Janaka (father of Sita in Ramayana) indulged in affairs of his kingdom with an unattached attitude. During his reign as a King, none suffered in the entire kingdom. He personally took care of the same.

JRD Tata (erstwhile scion of Tata Empire) was a karma Yogi par excellence. All his life JRD Tata lived like a true trustee of God. Not for a moment in his life he ever thought that he was the owner of Tata Empire. Working with an unattached attitude he accomplished everything in life he wanted to.

In the trusteeship concept age was never a bar. Right from six years of age I have indulged in affairs of life like a true trustee. Nothing material attracted me as I was searching for God all the time.

As per Bhagavad Gita working with a detached attitude means leaving the family or the work midway and leaving for confines of deep dense jungles (forests) to spend rest of life as a recluse, mendicant! The religious centers of India life Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi (to name a few) are full of such people who left their family midway in search of absolute truth.

Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita abhors working with a detached attitude. Only if we had no responsibility altogether, we could work with a detached attitude within the community or elsewhere.

Working with an unattached attitude is termed nishkama karma yoga in Hinduism. This practically means… offering fruits of karma performed to God Almighty all the time! This was an absolute truth. As we were primarily a soul atman that manifested human form to work out our karma, remove dross impurities within… all karma indulged by physical manifest self, fruits of the same always belonged to soul atman.
