Arjuna in his lifetime in the battle of Mahabharata after sermon of Bhagavad Gita finally succeeded in reaching stage of enlightenment. Supported by Lord Krishna (an avatar of his era) Arjuna finally succeeded in re-establishing dharma (righteousness) against evil forces of adharma (lawlessness). During times of Mahabharata amongst the entire population of the region only Arjuna was competent to assimilate jnana wisdom of Bhagavad Gita to gain enlightenment in his lifetime.
To the contrary Abhimanyu (son of Arjuna) committed a very grave mistake in the battle of Mahabharata. As detailed in Hindu mythology Abhimanyu even while in the womb of his mother gained knowledge about entering a chakravayuha successfully. Arjuna narrated the story of chakravayuha to his wife who was pregnant. And by the time Arjuna could tell the story of how to come out of chakravayuha, she fell asleep and Abhimanyu in womb could not gain wisdom of coming out of chakravayuha.
In real life, in the battle of Mahabharata Abhimanyu entered the chakravayuha created by Kauravas successfully, but could not come out of it of his own. He was surrounded by great Maharathis (warriors) from the Kaurava camp leading to his death. Although it was an act of cowardice on the part of Kauravas, Abhimanyu in part was also to blame. At that time Abhimanyu was very young.
