For Inherent Messages to Reach Masses Saints and Sages of Different Era wrote Independent Treatises called Upanishads

The sacred scriptures of Hinduism in the initial stages consisted of four primary Vedas… viz. Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. As these scriptural texts were voluminous in nature… they could only be deciphered by learned scholars, sages and saints. For the inherent messages to reach masses… saints and sages of different era wrote independent treatises called Upanishads. The total Upanishads range above 200 but the primary Upanishads numbered 11. Every Upanishad dealt with different aspects of spiritual life containing detailed explanation of spiritual terminology.

With coming of Lord Krishna… even gist of Upanishads and four Vedas was reduced to sacred Bhagavad Gita. For a spiritual traveler there was nothing more sacred than teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita. The sermon of Bhagavad Gita formed summum bonum of spiritual life, sacred texts. Knower of Bhagavad Gita finally becomes knower of all… reaches stage of enlightenment forever.
