Lord Shiva Mahesh was part of Hindu Trinity of Gods Considered the Most Powerful of the Three

God as detailed in Hinduism scriptures was called Brahman, the one and only creator of present cosmos. Other than God Almighty (Brahman) nothing existed in cosmos. Adi Shankaracharya in his doctrine of Advaita Vedanta explicitly states that Brahman was the only truth of life.

Unable to conceive God in Nirakaar form (having no form), religious pundits of different times created forts of gods and goddesses so that mankind could indulge in prayers as per their choice and liking! One who believed in air aspect of God prayed to Vayu Devta. Those giving weightage to monsoons prayed to Varun Devta. Those wishing welfare in general prayed to Lord Ganesha.

Lord Shiva (also called Mahesh) was part of Hindu Trinity of gods and considered the most powerful of the three. In reality all the three gods… Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva were attributes of Brahman, nothing more. Lord Shiva was considered as the ultimate maintainer, destroyer… having absolute control over death.

Travelers of religious path (rituals), not spirituality indulged in attributes of God Almighty.
