We could not read into Vedas literally. Everything in scriptures could be assimilated only through contemplation, introspection… logical reasoning!
As distinctly displayed in Vedas… God Almighty (Brahman in Hinduism) was one and only one, the creator of present cosmos. As per doctrine of Maya propagated by Adi Shankaracharya nothing other than Brahman existed in entire cosmos!
Brahman was Nirguna (attribute less), Nirakaar (having no form). As mankind… masses, commoners… even scholars found it difficult to conceptualize enormity of Brahman in its original Nirakaar, Nirguna form… they dealt only in Sakaar form of God (having a form). To worship, offer prayers to Brahman… various idols of different gods and goddesses were created by mankind.
As per Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita one must offer all prayers, worship directly to Brahman, never its attributes. Whichever path we choose… all the prayers, worship as per Krishna ultimately reaches Brahman only!
