Committing suicide is the most heinous of all crimes that could be committed by human beings, the highest manifest stage in cosmic life cycle. If a human being commits suicide there was nothing bad then that. Most societies were committed out of sorrow, sufferings in present life with the hope that we manifest a good life in next manifestation.
By committing suicide we were cutting short the journey undertaken by our soul atman. How could we interfere in the life cycle of a soul atman, the real master and controller of human life! For committing this sin if at the time of death the residual balance of karma demanded our birth in a high-class family, then in most likelihood we shall get a birth in a place of sufferings, a very low class family! The purpose for which suicide was committed was lost. We would now be taking birth at a lower karmic level.
Why interfere in the cosmic domain and mar our present and future.
Sages who can take Samadhi of their own were enlightened souls who reached stage of absolute purity. After reaching stage of enlightenment they could leave their mortal frame any given moment of time.
