Swami Vivekananda did not gain enlightenment in his lifetime. He could have easily done so had he wanted to. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa his spiritual master asked Swami Vivekananda, why he had come to him if his goal of life was not reaching God… he politely replied only to have a glimpse of God Almighty, affirm my faith in existence of God.
Liberated souls like Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana could be invoked by traveling path of spirituality. We usually invoked powers of enlightened souls for their blessings, never seeking guidance. Guidance of enlightened ones was always available through the vast amount of literature relating to Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana available in market.
