Hinduism religion termed a way of life primarily has two distinct paths to follow, one path of religion (rituals) that most people in India presently followed and other path of spirituality that directly helped human beings in realizing their true inner potential, realizing self, reaching god.
Spiritualism is different from spirituality. Spiritualism is a belief developed in Western world that spirits of dead could contact with living. Spiritualism has no place in Hinduism whatsoever
In present Kali Yuga… Dark Age, metal age one could never realized god, realize self via path of religion (path of rituals). Indulging in bhakti yoga and karma yoga alone one could not reach god. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana the two spiritual stalwarts who succeeded in reaching God in their lifetime initially started in search of God via path of bhakti yoga and karma yoga but finding God could not be reached via path of bhakti yoga alone both finally switched to path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom).
Path of spirituality is travelling path of jnana yoga (path of absolute wisdom). To understand the hidden underlying meaning of sacred texts of different religions of world, path of jnana yoga, path of contemplation, path of logical reasoning, self enquiry was necessitated. Nothing in scriptures could be understood literally, they demand reading in between the lines. No wonder how many times we read, the gist of Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads could not be assimilated.
Reaching stage of enlightenment in Hinduism becomes possible only through path of jnana yoga, path of indulgence in scriptures through contemplation. We like it or not, we have to indulge in self enquiry on each and every aspect of life, spiritual, religious or ephemeral. Ritually going to temples churches or mosques even for whole life would not yield anything. Path of self enquiry followed by Maharishi Ramana was an absolute must if we desire understanding gist of Bhagavad Gita in totality.
