Self Realized Souls – Do they invoke Karma?

Even though self realized people have negated karma to zero, they still retain a small portion of dross impurities within in absence of which the soul atman having gained absolute purity would leave the body forever. This phenomenon can be understood by the following example –

If we purified a block of silver and left it in the open for a month or so… what would happen? When we come looking for it after a month’s time, we may not find it anywhere. Instead a black lump of stone would be found in its place. What actually happened, the pure silver acted with oxygen and converted into silver oxide, the black coating on top of silver!

Similar is the case with self realized beings. When someone asked Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa why he took so much interest in cooking food for others, he simply replied, just for the sake of retaining my body. He was perfectly right in his surmise. The moment a self realized soul gained absolute purity, it would depart from this world that very moment.

Actions of self realized souls definitely produce karma but it can be termed as superficial karma, one that was not binding (could not create any type of bondage). A self realized soul can wash away this superficial karma any given moment of time. A self realized soul can leave the mortal body at will.
