To travel path of spirituality successfully in yesteryears sages, Rishis left confines of home to contemplate on abstract truths of life in isolation. In Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says if one could indulge in contemplation while living in Grihastha ashram (family life), one would be biggest Yogi of all!
If we could avoid having a family on path of pure spirituality, it was preferable. But we could not leave our family midway in search of cosmic truths of life like Siddhartha Gautama. Just touching feet of wife and child does not absolve us from karma. We have to burn our karma in totality before we could indulge in path of pure spirituality successfully.
On path of pure spirituality even the family we lived within would become unattached later on. For a true seeker, traveler of spiritual path the whole world finally becomes one large family. To overpower five senses and mind, total control over Moha (extreme emotional attachment) was necessitated. This detachment from Moha leads us away from family. We were physically present but still far away.
