It was inbuilt into human psyche to react, to agitate whenever our desires wishes were unfulfilled. To come out of this predicament our indulging in karma, nishkama karma way of life was suggested in scriptures of Hinduism. Nishkama karma yoga means indulgence in karma without caring for fruits of karma performed. The normal reaction to this analogy worldwide was, why indulge in karma if there were no results?
We understood precept of nishkama karma yoga wrongly. Bhagavad Gita says we must not attach self to fruits of karma performed as it creates further bondages. It was attachment that was harmful, never the results. As per Bhagavad Gita the present human form was manifested by our soul atman to cleanse itself of dross impurities within. Nishkama karma yoga says fruits of karma always belonged to our soul atman, never the individual physical self.
More than desires, greater the attachments! More unfulfilled desires, greater the agony. And this agony leads to internal agitation living no space for peace within. We must also practice patience, persistence and perseverance of the highest order to experience happiness and peace in life. Working like a true trustee we could become forever free from bondages of heartaches that disturbed our cool.
As per trusteeship concept everything belonged to God Almighty, we were only a custodian… caretaker in the journey of life. King Janaka (father of Sita in Ramayana) indulged in affairs of his kingdom with an unattached attitude. He never experienced any type of heartburning or mental agitation while indulgence in routine affairs of his kingdom. Say was the case with JRD Tata, the erstwhile scion of Tata Empire.
JRD Tata not only believed in trusteeship concept but also worked for welfare of mankind all the time. Not for a single moment in life he gave meaning to worldly wealth. For him welfare of entire mankind, his staff and workers were above all. Both King Janaka and JRD Tata exhibited qualities of true karma yogis par excellence. We truly could manifest life, come clean of all heartaches by becoming a Karma Yogi.
