The statement you quote has a very deep-rooted spiritual meaning. Most human beings world over think, were under a misnomer that our mind power increases with doses of knowledge. In field of pure spirituality the vice versa was truth. We need not fill our minds, clutter our minds with all sorts of knowledge literally… to eradicate dross impurities within our soul atman, we need establishing absolute control over five senses and mind. To establish control over mind power, the vessel of the mind has to be emptied, not filled.
And how do we establish absolute control over five senses and mind. How do we remove dross impurities within our soul atman? This becomes possible by travelling path of pure spirituality, indulgence in path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom). Indulgence in jnana (wisdom) results in burning of karma from within! Karma needs to be burnt in totality to reach stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana). To activate our brain we need fire of jnana (wisdom) to dispel all dross impurities within. In Hinduism this is termed penance, atonement, propitiation, expiation. Karma is always burnt from within never externally. Read more on karma
