The most prominent evil (practice) in Hinduism religion as of today was… following path of religion, religious practices (rituals) and calling it spirituality. Indulging in rituals (religious practices) in present times none could reach God. God can only be reached via path of spirituality detailed in Bhagavad Gita.
Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana initially started their pursuit of God via path of bhakti yoga… indulgence in religious practices but realizing God could not be reached via path of bhakti yoga alone… both finally switched to path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom) and nishkama karma yoga.
