Commoners, masses definitely believed holy books blindly but not all. Holy books are primarily divided into two categories… religious and spiritual. Most religious books relate to rituals that had no relation to spirituality. If we desire reaching God in present life our indulgence in spiritual books was necessitated. Following path of religion (path of rituals) none reached God in present times.
I relate to India and Hinduism. In Hinduism sacred texts like Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads (independent treatises) mainly catered to spiritual needs of mankind. Sacred texts like Vedas (Hinduism revelations) primarily dealt with rituals… yagnas but also contained elements of spirituality. In present times indulgence in Vedas (Hinduism revelations) was not necessitated to reach God in present life.
Nothing in Bhagavad Gita or Upanishads stated say one reached swarga (heaven) after death. Such a belief relates to books of religion (rituals). Concepts of swarga and naraka (heaven and hell) were dealt philosophically in books of spirituality like Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. To earn a living, to receive fat donations religious priests created a different story of swarga for mankind.
To believe or not to believe is our prerogative. By 13 years of age I had clearly understood that religious priests were making mockery of religion when talking of precepts life swarga (heaven). They successfully manipulated mankind to donate large amounts for securing a seat in swarga (heaven). On path of pure spirituality this was a clear humbug for milking mankind.
Mythology consisted of stories that had no relation to reality. All stories in mythology were only symbolic to explain the hidden spiritual precepts of life. But commoners, masses… even priests, pundits failed to realize the hidden true essence of life. Swimming in shallow waters most indulged in incomprehensible, unnecessary rituals of life. Why indulge and mar our present and future!
