Bhagavad Gita does not directly relate to happiness that was ephemeral, short lived! Bhagavad Gita directly relates to experiencing inner bliss, feelings of tranquility… serenity most of time. Bhagavad Gita deals with the subject of our true inner self existing in our heart as our soul atman, the spirit within. In terms of Bhagavad Gita the physical manifest body (human form) was but a medium for soul atman within to cleanse self of dross impurities within. Looking forward to external happiness in Bhagavad Gita and relating to literal meaning of shlokas verses does not mean anything.
The real happiness in life lay in tranquility, feelings of absolute bliss experienced while traveling path of pure spirituality. When our ego subdued considerably, when we succeeded establishing control over desires and wishes… control over five senses followed automatically. Establishing control over five senses was a long drawn possess but was not impossible in present Kali Yuga (Dark Age, metal age). When we let go something dear to our heart like blood relationships, it was hard pinching but extremely satisfying from within. Indulgence in yoga meditation demands our working for welfare of mankind all the time. For a true seeker, traveler of spiritual path the whole world finally becomes one large family.
In such circumstances external happiness meant nothing! Let us take case of Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism, preceptor), Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed… the four noble souls who succeeded in reaching stage of enlightenment in their lifetime. Were they not happy? For a person who transcends physical manifest life, only inner happiness… inner beauty mattered. Something that was related to 5 senses no more mattered. For a seeker human body itself was a garment for soul atman within. Bodily pleasures were left behind. A true seeker all the time wanted emancipation from cycle of birth and death forever at the earliest. This becomes possible when we negate karma to zero.
Negation of karma to zero means everything related to physical manifest life became meaningless. For one who gains enlightenment forever, for a pure soul atman… nothing other than God Almighty mattered all the time. As all were sons and daughters of God, one worked for welfare of mankind all the time.
