All earthly relationships were limited to mother earth and come to naught after death of human body. In heaven and hell, none could go bodily. Both heaven and hell were places for hibernation of souls’ atmans.
Based on residual balance of karma at the time of death, the released atman keeps rotating in the same family for quite some time. It is the child that chooses ones parents. After death of human body, the released soul atman manifests a new body based on residual balance of karma at the time of death. Only if matching parents are available on mother earth, the soul atman manifests a body.
The matching parents could only be one that had matching karma. Based on this analogy, the karma of family members is supposed to be the closest but not necessarily always.
As per Bhagavad Gita, one who was our grandfather… may become our grandson in next manifestation.
