Study of Vedas and Upanishads was necessitated if our goal of life was spiritual. Indulgence in spirituality simply means… getting away from your family. And why is it so?
Path of spirituality demands that we indulged in world of souls atmans. As detailed in Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads we were primarily a spiritual being on its cosmic journey. To cleanse self of dross impurities within every soul atman manifests form after another until it reaches 8.4 millionth manifestation. As the journey of life belongs to our soul atman, all earthly relationships in the physical manifest form were ephemeral, temporal.
For a truly spiritual person the whole world becomes one large family.
In present times study of Bhagavad Gita alone sufficed to reach stage of enlightenment. One need not indulge in Vedas or Upanishads (independent treatises).
Literal study of Vedas and Upanishads carried no meaning. We could never indulge in scriptural texts literally. To unveil hidden cosmic precepts of life, our indulgence in introspection, self enquiry… path of logical reasoning was necessitated. Plan your goal of life and accordingly decide your path. Do not jump into path of spirituality as many people do.
I know many who started journey of spirituality sincerely only to quit midway finally becoming patients of severe depression. Spirituality in itself is a full-fledged goal of life, never to be indulged half-heartedly.
Still, if we want to indulge in Upanishads… we can get the best commentaries on all 11 primary Upanishads from Gita press Gorakhpur India. They have branches located in most cities of India. Copies of Vedas can be obtained from publishers of Indology. You would be lucky if you can get a knower of Vedas to impart you Vedic knowledge. In reality, path of spirituality is always covered all alone.
All my life from six years of age I indulged in teachings of Bhagavad Gita or Upanishads (independent treatises)… never Vedas. In present times, teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita suffice for human beings to reach stage of enlightenment.
