The karmic law was equally applicable to all species of life on mother earth including human beings. In human form it was very predominant but in lower forms of life it was applied automatically. If a lower species indulged in good karma (although mostly unknowingly), it evolved to higher stages of life. Indulgence in bad karma prolonged its cosmic journey delaying the evolution cycle.
Unmindful of laws of karma, Pap or Punya… animals indulged in karma!
As per Hinduism scriptures, initially came amoeba (the first manifestation by a soul atman in cosmic life cycle)… it further evolved into multi-cell formation, insect life, plant life, animal life and finally the human form. All human beings evolved directly from stage of animals.
