Souls’ atmans were indestructible. The entire timeline of 8.4 million manifestations in the life of a soul atman was one single span of life similar as a student remaining the same, keeps jumping from one class to another. To cleanse self of dross impurities within, the soul atman keeps manifesting form after another. This process of changing form after another was termed reincarnation, rebirth.
The reincarnation process by a soul atman comes to an end when it reaches 8.4 millionth manifestation, last in cosmic life cycle. This is the stage when human beings after gaining enlightenment reached stage of moksha salvation forever. The liberated soul atman finally enters kingdom of God (Vaikuntha in Hinduism).
