Bhagavad Gita Relatives and Friends

It is a proven principle of life that it was close relatives never friends who hurt you most. From childhood you start trusting your relations, whoever it be. With passage of time this bond of relationship gets stronger but only on the surface. As observed in practical life, one who was simple, a godly natured person most of time suffered at the hands of relatives with a materialistic bent of mind. Not all relatives conspired against us but most could not be trusted. Such relatives took advantage of the fact that we may not retaliate against them openly in the community, for fear of backlash.

With friends it is altogether different. Even though they knew our weaknesses and strength, we can always depend on our close friends. Next to god and our preceptors, we could only trust our close friends. I have personally observed that friends could be trusted almost equivalent of family members. Deep within friendship laid bonds that never severed with time. When in dire straits, it is only close friends that come for help. Even close family members may look the other way. The bond of friendship was definitely designed by God in moments of tranquility, serenity.

The cause for all sorrow emanates from our expectation. If we help our relatives, we expect something in return. And if that help does not come, we find ourselves in a quandary. If we help a relative in need, we must never expect something in return. Helping a relative with an expectation of return results in heartburn in later stages of life! It is best for us either we do not help the relative or never have an expectation. I have observed that if we lent money to relatives or friends, it always results in becoming foes for life. True friends are hard to come by. In the present materialistic age even close friends deserted in times of need.
