Politics truly had no place in field of pure spirituality. A true spiritual master could never indulge in field of politics. Spirituality was much above mundane affairs of life let alone politics. Spiritual leaders indulging in politics failed to understand, spirituality was distinct from religion. Many so-called spiritual leaders in India indulged in political affairs messing it all up. Spirituality was traveling the inner path, trying to reach consciousness, soul atman existing in our heart. In a limited time span of 70 to 80 years, it was extremely difficult to reach stage of enlightenment. Where was the time for indulgence in politics?
Mahavira, 24th Tirthankara of Jainism explicitly says one must indulge in active community service only after gaining enlightenment, never before! How could a non-enlightened person preach anything about spirituality! In the field of spirituality all our time was consumed in contemplation, introspection… logical reasoning for reaching hidden inner truths of life contained in scriptures of different religions of world. Spirituality was all about truth and only truth. A truthful person would never indulge in politics. However, to re-establish dharma (righteousness) advent of an avatar was mandated in Hinduism scriptures.
Such indulgence by an avatar (God manifest in human form) was distinct from indulgence in petty politics. In field of pure spirituality there was no place for pretence, everything was laid bare! If enlightened souls like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed existed in present times… political leaders of different countries would have probably gone to them for advice, nothing more. Active participation in politics by a spiritual person was totally ruled out.
