If we say, there was no spirituality or higher power in life then why did Lord Krishna advent in Dwapar Yuga in a period of total strife and tribulation. So was the case with most Tirthankaras of Jainism (preceptors). All started their spiritual pursuit of life amidst total chaos in the society.
When dominated by our ego, everything seemed materialistic, valueless… meaningless! Those who traveled path of truthfulness, guided by the voice of their soul atman pursued path of spirituality. Amidst chaos lay seeds of spiritual path. Those who were truthful maintained their faith in God all the time.
We are presently passing through Kali Yuga phase of life when materialistic tendencies peaked. It is in such adversity comes a messiah, savior… the awaited avatar of Kali Yuga… Kalki Avatar! One who shall succeed in re-establishing dharma (righteousness) against forces of adharma (lawlessness)!
For travelers of spiritual path pearls and diamonds were nothing more than stones polished bright. World remaining the same, difference lay in our perception! For some glass was half full, for others half empty.
