Literal reading is of little help on path of pure spirituality. All sacred texts demand path of contemplation, path of logical reasoning to reach hidden underlying cosmic truths of life. I have come across many people who confirmed they had read Bhagavad Gita several times still, nothing was clear to them.
While indulging in day-to-day routines of life, dominated by a bloated ego we become more and more materialistic day by day. But material pursuits of life conflict with our ultimate goal as a soul atman, the consciousness within. Ever since souls atmans separated from their source God Almighty himself (Brahman in Hinduism), they desire merging with Parmatman (God) at the earliest.
This becomes possible when we travelled path of pure spirituality to reach stage of enlightenment. Indulgence in anything godly conflicts with achievements of material world! We could not successfully retain all that was material yet, travel path of pure spirituality successfully to reach God in present life. Riding two boats at the same time was not possible.
For travelling path of pure spirituality our indulgence in karma, nishkama karma way of life was mandated. We just could not care for fruits of karma performed on path of pure spirituality. As the present life was manifested by our soul atman, the fruits of karma performed also belonged to our soul atman, the spirit within. The precept of nishkama karma yoga conflicts with material goals of life.
We had to choose one goal of life weather spiritual or materialistic. Unless we decided on that, your predicament of missing something in life would continue forever. In Hinduism scriptures the definition of a perfect Yogi was that of a householder who while indulging in daily routines of life still manages to reach god. Examples of such karma yogis par excellence were limited but travelling such a path was not impossible. In present times one need not become a recluse and go to deep dense jungles (forests) to contemplate, meditate on god. Yoga meditation can be indulged even while living a family life.
Our getting emotional means workings of material world in conflict with world of souls’ atmans. This could only be overcome by indulgence in teachings contained in sacred texts. Interacting with children provides great solace. Why? Children were born in image of God Almighty. They were innocent, pure.
