Before coming of religions (even a single religion) existed Dharma (force of righteousness). It was in such times highly evolved sages and saints of yesteryears invoked direct messages from God termed Vedas in Hinduism. Individual sages developed independent treatises, philosophies termed Upanishads. And finally came, Lord Krishna with his sermon of Bhagavad Gita.
The Advaita philosophy of Hinduism propagated by Adi Shankaracharya clearly states that Brahman (God Almighty) was the only truth of life and nothing besides God Almighty existed in entire cosmos. And God Almighty was not the form of human beings. It was prime pure celestial power, the combined total of all souls’ atmans in cosmos in their pure form.
If God was not the form of human beings, opined sages and saints then he must be a cluster of pure energy. From that very angle every soul atman also is a cluster of pure cosmic energy. The Advaita doctrine of philosophy by Adi Sankara says even human beings were nothing more than clusters of atoms and molecules. When viewed from senses point of view things appeared solid, in reality human beings truly were nothing more than clusters of atoms and molecules.
Summarizing this fact, sages and saints realized that gravitational pull of sun and moon directly affected life on mother earth. And so they surmised that most planets near to earth would directly influence life on mother earth. If any human being had more iron in the body, he would be affected more by planet Mars as Mars primarily consisted of iron in its body and could act as a large magnet.
Similar would be the predicament with other planetary systems. Those affected by Jupiter were considered more intelligent, wise. And slowly science of astrology came into being. Astrology cannot be rejected outright as it could never be proved on altar of science. But, effect of various planets on human beings on mother earth also could not be denied.
With passage of time mankind as whole started worshipping various planets in the solar system. Regarding worshipping, precepts of Hinduism were absolutely clear on the issue. As the means, accordingly the manifestation! If the villagers could not afford building a temple then for them even rivers, mountains… a banyan tree were sacred to offer prayers and worship.
The concept of God in Hinduism was simple. One who feared power of wind worshipped Vayu Devta. One who feared excessive raining worshipped God Varuna! Those inflicted by scorching heat worshipped Sun God. In Hinduism all rivers were sacred as they provided direct support to mankind. Precepts of Hinduism also say behind all attributes, manifestations of God existed Brahman, the one and only God of creation.
